Current Meters

Current Meters are instruments designed to measure the velocity of moving water in a river in order to determine its' discharge, also referred to as streamflow. The Current Meters manufactured by Scientific Instruments are "Price Type" current meters. "Price Type" current meter refers to current meters built according to a design by the late William Price, with a horizontally mounted "Bucket Wheel" which is rotated by the moving water. The rate of rotation of the bucket wheel on the current meter is proportional to the speed of the moving water at that particular point.

Our Current Meters come in two basic sizes designated as "AA" and "Pygmy"(also called "Mini") meters.

"AA" current meters are generally used in deeper and swifter waters than the "Mini". "AA" current meters feature a Bucket Wheel 5" in diameter and are designed to be used either by direct wading measurement or suspended by a cable from an overhead structure or boat. They are also capable of registering either every revolution, or every 5th revolution of the Bucket Wheel, which aids in measurements in fast moving water. There are also several design variations of the "AA" current meter intended to optimized its' function with electronic data collection or use under ice.

"Mini" current meters are intended for shallower, slower moving waters and feature a Bucket Wheel 2" in diameter (4/10 scale to the "AA") and are designed for wading measurements only.
